Henry S. Whitehead nació en Elizabeth, New Jersey, en 1882, y se graduó en Harvard en 1904, en la misma clase que Franklin D. Roosevelt. En 1909 ingresa en la escuela de teología de Connecticut, donde es ordenado diácono tres años después. Entre 1921 y 1929 Whitehead fue enviado como diácono a Santa Cruz, en las Islas Vírgenes.
