El objetivo de este libro es presentar una forma distinta de acercamiento a la literatura. Se trata de ver cómo muchas veces se hace literatura a partir de textos literarios ya existentes. Tras plantear en términos generales este hecho, se pasa revista a algunos procesos de transtextualización en la literatura española. El libro se cierra con diez unidades didácticas en las que se proponen actividades sobre textos concretos entre los cuales existe algún tipo de relación transtextual.
