El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro

Sinopsis del Libro

Libro El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro

El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, the Royal Road of the Interior, is the earliest Euro-American trade route of cultures and commerce in the United States. It spanned about 1,800 miles from Mexico City, where the road originated, to Santa Fe, in New Mexico. For three centuries, this Spanish colonial road followed a network of ancient Native American footpaths and trails that followed the wide expanse of the Rio Grande valley. There were parajes, or campgrounds, along the way for travelers, and early Spanish settlements were established too. Some of the towns and villages are now modern cities, such as Las Cruces, Albuquerque, and Santa Fe. Mexico City, as the former capital of La Nueva España, New Spain, is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Center. In 2000, El Camino Real was officially designated as a national historic trail, administered by the US Department of the Interior. In 2005, the El Camino Real International Heritage Center was erected near Socorro, New Mexico. This is an interpretive learning center that presents the history and heritage of the Royal Road in the region as an integral part of Spain's global network of roads and maritime trade routes.

Libro Brothers of the Light

The Penitente Brotherhood reenact the Passion of Christ through self-mortification of the flesh and emulation of His crucifixion each year in New Mexico during the Catholic Lenten season. This vital sect of ancient Spanish Catholicism has been shrouded in controversy and secrecy until this author's balanced exploration of its origins, rituals, and ceremonies. De Aragon includes descriptions of their art and their albados, or hymns, which are published here in both Spanish and English.

Duarte

Libro Duarte

Mexican Army veteran Andres Duarte was granted 6,595 acres along the southern foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains in 1841 by the governor of Alta California. Rancho Azusa de Duarte eventually was carved into 40-acre parcels, and arriving families from the East and Midwest built schools, installed water lines, and grew crops. By 1900, two major rail lines served the area's thriving citrus industry. Duarte's beneficial climate led to the establishment in 1913 of a tuberculosis sanitarium, which became City of Hope, the world-class cancer treatment center. Bandleader Glenn Miller settled in...

Spain and the Mediterranean in the Later Middle Ages

Libro Spain and the Mediterranean in the Later Middle Ages

These papers are centered on the Crown of Aragon in the later Middle Ages, its achievements (the more remarkable given the very evident problems with which it was beset), and especially on its role in the Mediterranean. Hence the emphasis on Majorca, its leading intellectual figure, Ramon Lull (1232-1316), and his influence, and related to these the article on Thomas Aquinas. Other studies deal with the relations of Christians and Jews in Majorca, down to the Expulsion from Spain. In these papers Professor Hillgarth seeks to investigate the transmission of learning and how what is transmitted ...
