íQué dulce culpa la de habernos dado tanta felicidad en estos tiempos yermos, en este horror cotidiano de abrir el periódico y encontrarlo salpicado de sangre y de verg ̧enza, qué interregnos de alegría en este siniestro horizonte de máquinas de muerteî. Con estas palabras se refiere Cortázar a textos cuyo objeto es el de una crítica de artes plásticas, esbozada como el homenaje a quienes le han obligado a aceptar la libertad como único territorio habitable.

La docena de trabajos que componen el presente volumen se ciñen al periodo 1750-1850, o sea al que va de la época de la Ilustración a la del Romanticismo, y desvelan una de las peculiaridades de la investigación en un sector del hispanismo universitario francés: la dedicación al estudio de la "civilización". El denominador común de ese mosaico original de artículos se halla en el escrutinio de la dialéctica propia del fluir irregular del "tiempo de la Historia en España", que articula continuidades, evoluciones progressivas y rupturas.
