Sinopsis del Libro

Los nacionalismos periféricos en España surgieron en el siglo XIX evolucionando desde el movimiento romántico hasta los grupos políticos de carácter independentista en Cataluña, el País Vasco, e incluso en Galicia. La radicalización de estos movimientos obedece a diversos factores, pero uno de ellos fue sin duda la influencia que sobre ellos ejerció el Ejército español entre el periodo que comprende la finalización de la monarquía isabelina en 1868 y el inicio de la Guerra Civil española en 1936. La ausencia de un enemigo exterior que amenazara la soberanía nacional, el fracaso de la germinación de un sentimiento nacional en todos los territorios del Estado y el cambio de mentalidad de los oficiales del Ejército, que evolucionaron desde un posicionamiento liberal a otro reaccionario e intransigente, así como su creciente protagonismo en la política nacional, contribuyeron decisivamente a la mutación de los regionalismos en nacionalismos, y de estos últimos en movimientos separatistas configurando una problemática territorial que bien entrados en el siglo XXI, aún perdura en nuestro país.
