Don Manuel Romero de Terreros, Marqués de San Francisco, y descendiente del insigne fundador del Nacional Monte de Piedad (institución única en su tiempo que prestaba dinero a los necesitados), escribió este estudio sobre el arte colonial de México. Romero considera que el arte colonial es "el arte verdaderamente mexicano." Aunque es un texto breve, el autor ha incluido un examen detallado de las obras de arte fabricadas en la Nueva España; tiene además el mérito de incluir fotografías de monumentos que aún estaban en pie diez años después de la Revolución Mexicana.

The book is an historic and graphical account of the patios of "vecindad" (neighbourhood) in the port city of Veracruz, in a period that goes from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 21st century. The foreword of this edition, states that the first record of a patio of a "vecindad" dates back to 1791, highlighting that those patios have seen the early years of musician and singer "Toña la Negra" and were the place of origin of the famous "picadas" from Veracruz, one of the most popular snacks of the jarocha traditional cuisine.
