En una primera parte se estudia el proceso de configuración de la villa de Pontevedra entre mediados del siglo XII y finales del XIII, prestando especial atención a las peculiares circunstancias que concurren en la formación del nuevo núcleo urbano, que le darán su carácter específico a nivel económico, social e institucional. La segunda parte abarca el período de los siglos XIV y XV y se estructura en cuatro capítulos dedicados al estudio de la infraestructura urbana, las actividades económicas, la evolución de la sociedad y las instituciones concejal y señorial.
