En esta obra el autor analiza el papel de la etimología en el estudio del vocabulario de las lenguas. También estudia la historia del español exponiendo la herencia que diversas lenguas le legaron a lo largo de los siglos, de las prerromanas a las modernas, poniendo especial atención al español de México. El autor establece un puente entre lengua y cultura, y toca otros temas como el uso y desuso de vocabulario, las diferentes ideologías lingüísticas y su actitud hacia los extranjerismos, y la importancia de usar el español como lengua de conocimiento.
