Esta obra descorre el velo de un vasto y relevante aspecto de la sociedad mexicana en gestación durante las últimas décadas de la colonia y los primeros lustros de México independiente. Se explican a través del púlpito los destellos otoñales del barroco, el tránsito al neoclásico, la euforia del guadalupanismo, la variedad de devociones y valores de aquella sociedad rezandera y pecadora; en fin, el drama desgarrador de la insurgencia.
