Por su situacion geografica, la importancia de los hechos registrados en este territorio ha sido preeminente en la definicion del destino nacional, lo mismo en la epoca prehispanica, en que albergo a la civilizacion olmeca --la mas antigua conocida de Mesoamerica--, que en el siglo XVI en el que se consolido como entrada a la colonizacion, y por varios siglos paso obligado para mercancias, viajeros e ideas entre el viejo y el nuevo mundo. Se cierra el recorrido en los anos 50, atendiendo a las transformaciones economicas, politicas y sociales que todos estos procesos implicaron para el estado.
