Esteban de Garibay, cronista oficial de Felipe II, fue el autor de la primera Historia de España y de un inédito nobiliario, y legó una obra autobiográfica rara en el Siglo de Oro, editada en 1854 con descuido y bajo el título de “Memorias”, inasequible al público e ignorada por historiadores, tal vez perplejos sobre su género literario. Como homenaje a Garibay en el IV centenario de su muerte, su autobiografía sale a la luz en esta edición crítica. Una incisiva introducción da la clave psicológica del texto, ilustrado con oportunas notas que acompañan la lectura de este singular testimonio de un vasco en la corte del rey Felipe.
