La obra de Arriaza y Standen aquí presentada trata de problemas de antiguos pobladores que son, en cierta medida, invariables en el tiempo y propios del crecimiento humano. Las nuevas tecnologías y nuevos tipos de organizaciones sociales predisponen a los humanos al sedentarismo y producen además algún tipo de contaminación en el entorno. En esta obra se muestran evidencias que dicho sedentarismo afectó la calidad de vida de los pescadores Chinchorros, haciéndolos proclives a nuevas enfermedades e infecciones crónicas.
