Ensayo ilustrado de la historia cultural de mesoamérica. Se inicia con un estudio de los primeros habitantes del continente, y culmina con la descripción de la civilización azteca, de la que, naturalmente, se cuenta con muchísimos datos.

A esta obra debemos una visión más equilibrada de una vasta polémica: la discusión que contrasta -de 1750 a 1900- una América débil e inferior con una Europa madura y fuerte. Así aparece la defensa de los habitantes del continente americano, quienes le darán a la disputa un tono de encendido debate espiritual.
