La obra se abre con una conmovedora carta redactada hacia 1755 por doña Teresa Hernández Cañedo, monja del convento de Santa Isabel de la ciudad de Salamanca, dirigida a su padre, uno de los responsables del trance en el que la religiosa se veía inmersa. A través de esta misiva doña Teresa imploraba mi­sericordia a su progenitor, un hombre entonces sexagenario y enfermo. Ignoramos si éste logró leer alguna vez la carta.
